24/7 Emergency Service
Rely on Buffington Brothers Heating & Cooling for 24/7 emergency services!
We are here to keep you cool this summer — 24/7.
Systems do not fail politely. They quit on the hottest Saturday of July, on Christmas morning, and at two in the morning when the temperature drops. That is exactly when a house full of people needs them working, so we answer the phone outside business hours.
What counts as an emergency
Some problems genuinely cannot wait until Monday:
- No cooling during a heat advisory, particularly with older adults, infants, or anyone with a medical condition in the house
- No heat during a hard freeze — a comfort problem that becomes a burst-pipe problem
- A gas smell. Leave the house first, then call the gas company, then call us
- A carbon monoxide alarm. Get everyone outside and call 911 — this is not a wait-and-see situation
- Burning smells, sparking, or a breaker that trips repeatedly when the system starts
- Water pouring from the air handler, which usually means a blocked condensate drain and can damage ceilings and flooring quickly
- A commercial system down where a restaurant's walk-in, a business's inventory, or a full building of customers depends on it
Things worth checking before you call
Some after-hours calls turn out to have simple causes, and it costs nothing to look:
- Thermostat. Confirm it is set to cool, the setpoint is below room temperature, and the batteries are not dead.
- Breaker. Check the panel for a tripped breaker, and the outdoor disconnect near the condenser.
- Furnace switch. It looks like a light switch near the equipment and gets flipped off by accident more often than you would think.
- Filter. A severely clogged filter can shut a system down on a safety limit.
- Condensate pan switch. Many systems shut themselves off deliberately when the pan fills, to avoid water damage.
If none of that explains it, call us. And if you are not comfortable checking any of it, that is fine too — that is what we are for.
While you wait
In summer heat, close blinds on the sunny side, move to the lowest level of the house, run ceiling fans, and drink water. Heat illness is a genuine risk during a long outage, so do not tough it out if anyone starts feeling unwell.
In winter, gather into one room, close doors to unused spaces, and open cabinets under sinks on exterior walls to keep pipes above freezing. If you use space heaters, keep them clear of anything flammable and plug them straight into a wall outlet — never an extension cord.
Why local matters at 2 a.m.
An after-hours call reaches people who live here, in a shop that has been in Poplar Bluff since 1951, with parts on the truck for the equipment common in this area. That is a different experience from a call center routing your problem to whoever is available.
Our technicians are NATE and EPA certified, and we are a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer.

Regular hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with emergency service available on weekends and after hours.
Put (573) 785-6768 in your phone now, before you need it. And if you would rather not be making this call at all, ask about our maintenance plan — most emergencies start as something a seasonal inspection would have caught, and plan members get priority scheduling.
