Are Heat Pumps a Good Fit for Southeast Missouri Homes?

Heat pumps come up in almost every replacement conversation now, and there is a lot of confusion about whether they make sense in our climate. Southeast Missouri is not Florida and it is not Minnesota — which actually puts us in reasonable territory for the technology.

Here is a straight assessment of where a heat pump fits and where it does not.

How a heat pump differs from a furnace

A furnace creates heat by burning fuel. A heat pump moves heat instead, using refrigerant to pull warmth from outdoor air and deliver it inside. In summer it reverses and works exactly like an air conditioner.

Because moving heat takes less energy than creating it, a heat pump can deliver more heating energy than the electrical energy it consumes. That is the efficiency argument, and it is real — but it depends on outdoor temperature.

The cold-weather question

The old objection was that heat pumps stop working when it gets cold. That was fair once. Modern equipment has improved substantially, and today's units hold useful capacity at temperatures that would have defeated a unit from twenty years ago.

The physics still apply, though: as outdoor temperature drops, there is less heat available to move, so capacity falls just as demand rises. Our winters here include stretches in the teens and occasional single digits. A heat pump needs a plan for those days.

That plan is usually a dual-fuel or hybrid system: a heat pump paired with a gas furnace. The heat pump handles the mild-to-moderate weather that makes up most of our heating season, and the furnace takes over when it gets genuinely cold. You get heat pump efficiency most of the time and furnace capacity when you need it, with the changeover handled automatically.

Where gas is not available, an all-electric heat pump with electric backup heat is the alternative. It works, but the backup strips are expensive to run, so system sizing and controls matter more.

Where heat pumps do well here

  • Homes without gas service. Compared to electric resistance heat or propane, a heat pump is usually a significant operating-cost improvement.
  • Replacing an aging AC and furnace together. If both are near end of life, dual-fuel is worth pricing — you are buying the outdoor unit anyway.
  • Additions, garages, and problem rooms. A ductless mini-split heat pump conditions a space without extending ductwork, and handles the room that has never been comfortable.
  • Year-round use of one system. One outdoor unit covers heating and cooling, which simplifies maintenance.

Where a furnace still makes more sense

If you have inexpensive natural gas, a relatively new furnace, and only the air conditioner has failed, replacing the AC alone is often the better economics. A heat pump is not automatically the right answer, and anyone who tells you it always is has stopped doing the math.

The honest comparison depends on your fuel costs, your home's insulation and duct condition, how long you plan to stay, and installed cost — not on a national average.

A note on incentives

Be careful with tax-credit information you find online, much of which is out of date. The federal energy-efficiency credits that applied to qualifying equipment in prior years ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Do not assume a federal credit is available on a 2026 installation.

Utility and cooperative rebate programs are separate and can still apply. Those change over time and vary by provider, so check current offerings with your electric provider — and confirm rather than relying on a contractor's brochure.

Sizing matters more with a heat pump than with a furnace, because the equipment operates closer to its limits at design conditions. That means a real load calculation, an assessment of your ductwork, and a conversation about how you actually use your home.
