A family business, still

Buffington Brothers Heating & Cooling opened in 1951, founded by two brothers, Claude and Vernon Buffington. It began as a two-person operation — the brothers doing the work themselves.

Claude's son, Stan Buffington, grew up in the business and started installing at an early age. Around 1974 Stan and his wife Mary bought the company from his father and uncle, and grew it from those two people into a business of more than forty. Two of their three children, Stacy and Ryan, are in the business today as the third generation, and the fourth generation — the grandchildren — can already be found around the office.

We are still family owned and operated, seventy years in.

What we do

We started in heating and cooling and stayed there, but the definition kept widening as customers needed more:

• Heating and cooling — repair, replacement, and new installation for residential and commercial buildings, including air conditioning, furnaces, heat pumps, ductless systems, and boilers
• Custom ductwork — fabricated in-house to fit the building in front of us, rather than forcing stock parts to work
• Insulation and attic ventilation — often the highest-return comfort work in an older home
• Air duct cleaning and indoor air quality — filtration, purification, humidity control, and ventilation
• Generators — standby power, because ice storms take lines down here
• Commercial work — rooftop units and larger systems for businesses across the region

Who works on your system

Our technicians and installers are NATE certified and EPA certified, and we are OSHA certified. Training is ongoing rather than something done once at hire.

We have been a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer since 2003. That status is not permanent — it requires meeting standards for technical training, customer satisfaction, and business practices, and holding them year after year.

Where we work

We serve Poplar Bluff and the surrounding Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas area. Our family and our staff are from here. The people whose systems we service are our neighbors, our kids' classmates' parents, and the businesses we shop at — which is a strong incentive to do the job right.

We are also glad to support Sacred Heart Catholic Church and School and sports through the Poplar Bluff school system.
